This Perth Mint release features a $1 coin as well as an Australia Post 60c stamp postmarked 10 May 2011, Lilydale Vic, 3140.
Dame Nellie Melba was Australia’s first international celebrity. She was born Helen Porter Mitchell in Richmond Melbourne 150 years ago in 2011. After making her debut in Europe in 1887, she was feted throughout Europe and America until her retirement in the late 1920’s. She died in Sydney in 1931 and is buried in Lilydale cemetery not far from her beloved Coome Cottage, the Coldstream property she purchased in 1909.
